Margaret was born in The Bronx, New
York on June 14, 1904. She started to study photography as a hobby while a
very young woman. She attended several universities throughout the US
including Columbia University, University of Michigan, University of Indiana
receiving her degree in 1927 from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Margaret
Bourke-White was a forerunner in the new field of photojournalism, and she
was the first woman to be hired as such in a prestigious magazine at the
time. Besides, she was the first Western photographer allowed in the Soviet
Union, the first female war correspondent and the first to work in combat
zones in World War II. She made history with her photographs and different
publications. She died in Connecticut on August 27, 1971. |
